My son was home for the Easter weekend. I asked him if we could try a quick portrait session. It was a cold weekend, so between setups in the home studio (i.e. the garage), he slipped on my padded parka to keep warm. We tried a variety of lighting setups, mostly with just a single flash, and ended up with this one. The key light is an SB900 in a Westcott Rapid octabox, with a little flick of fill for the shadows from a second SB900 camera left. D810 with 70-200.
I deliberately kept the tones quite low, because I like the atmosphere they give the picture. I've done very little in Photoshop, so this is very much the way it looked out of the camera, apart from burning in around the edges.
I hadn't anticipated photographing him with the parka, but in the end, I like the look so much, this is actually my favourite of the session. While I would not dream of suggesting my work is in any way comparable to that of El Greco, there's something about the light, the textures and tones in this picture that reminds of some of his portraits.
